The National Conference on Wilderness and Travel Medicine
This upcoming weekend kicks off the National Conference on Wilderness and Travel Medicine, running from February 6-10, 2010. While this conference is held at Snowbird, UT and Santa Fe, NM later in the year, this weekend will be hosted by Big Sky, MT. This weekend will embrace the field of medicine that I have been dying to explore. I look forward to the plethora of knowledge it will surely offer, and I hope to find new opportunities to direct my nursing know-how. www.wilderness-medicine.com
The Peak Performance Backcountry Tour for the Cure
The event was a success! The girls toured the Utah backcountry for something more than the rush of awesome terrain and the exhilaration of breaking a sweat. This past April 26th and 27th a group of girls and myself, in conjunction with www.shejumps.com, toured for the cure. In the hopes of raising money for breast cancer research and support we threw on our skins and powered our way toward a long, steep, and narrow chute in Little Cottonwood Canyon–the Hypodermic Needle. Unfortunately we fell short and settled for the Pfiefer Horn instead, but it was amazing just the same. It was a full-day tour of up, up, and more up. In recognition of all those who have battled, survived, or succumbed to the pains and torments of breast cancer we took on the Wasatch. We rendezvoused for a night of spring-camping fun and celebration at the base of the Pfeifer Horn in Little Cottonwood. The next morning was an early start as we made our way–clad in pink–to shred some lines and enjoy the spring sun. Amidst the shred fest beneath the Pfeifer Horn, we stared up at the Needle. We all knew we’d be back for it. It’s 50 degrees of sheer chute at its entrance and 2300 vertical feet of Utah skiing. In the days leading up to the tour, we had collected pledges that went toward breast cancer research and support. All pledges and donations went directly to the Salt Lake City affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. www.komenslc.org
The tour was fun and a success. While I’m away from the mountains this winter, I hope to do see another Tour for the Cure again in the future. Thanks to all the girls of the Wasatch and Susan G. Komen.

Mount Kilimanjaro
The expedition has been pushed back…again. The expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro with One Revolution, led by paraolympian Chris Waddell, will be postponed until further notice. It was hoped to conquer Chris’s goal this March, but due to unforeseen health issues, Chris will take some more time to regain his strength before pursing the 19,ooo-some-foot monster. Chris is on a mission to shower some well deserved light on the abilities, determination, and spirit of those with disabilities. I’m fortunate to have an invite onto his mission and adventure to Africa’s highest mountain. Unfortunately I have had to pull out of the expedition and am sad to miss out on this incredible opportunity. Nontheless, Chris has my full support, and I’ll be cheering him on from North America. I wish him and the team the best. The latest postponement will allow for extra healing time, prep time, logistical ironing, and sponsorship support..
